Generator placement

Generator placement decides where the system will actually run when the lights go out. It is one of the most important safety and usability decisions in the whole plan.

Plan the location before the outage

A generator should never be operated inside a garage, shed, porch, crawlspace or any enclosed area. CPSC guidance says portable generators belong outside, at least 20 feet away from the home, with exhaust pointed away from doors, windows and vents.

Good placement is not just a safety rule. It also makes the setup easier to repeat. The homeowner should know where the generator sits, how the cord reaches the inlet, where fuel is handled and how the weather cover fits before a storm is already overhead.

The pros and tradeoffs

The biggest advantage is clarity. A marked or well-understood generator location reduces last-minute decisions and helps keep the system away from dangerous openings. It also helps with cord length, inlet location and weather cover selection.

The tradeoff is that every property is different. Landscaping, drainage, fences, driveways and nearby windows can limit the best options. A load assessment should include a placement conversation, because the safest spot may not be the closest spot.
